Placing one card on top of each other in the foundations or tableau during play, under certain restrictions, in the order prescribed under the rules of each game.

Any of the following rules may apply as to rank:
Up.
A card on a next-lower card. For example, a 10 on any 9.
(For example: foundations in Klondike)
Down. A card on a next-higher. For example, a 7 on any 8.
(For example: tableau in Klondike)
Either up or down. A card on a next-lower or a card on a next-higher. For example, a 9 either on a 10 or on a 8.
(For example: foundations in Golf)
Up, or down, by (a given interval).
For example, building up by twos means that a 3 may be built on an Ace, a 5 on a 3, etc., giving the full sequence Ace, 3, 5, 7, 9, Jack, King, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Queen.
(For example: foundations and tableau in Mount Olympus)
Regardless of rank
For example, any on any .
(For example: foundations in Osmosis)

Any of the following rules may apply as to suit:
Regardless of suit
For example, any 10 on any Jack.
(For example: tableau in Spider)
In suit
For example, a only on another .
(For example: foundations in Klondike)
In color
For example, a black card () only on another black card (), a red card () only on another red card ().
(For example: foundations in Rouge et Noir)
In alternating colors
For example, a black card () only on a red card (), a red card () only on a black card ().
(For example: tableau in Red and Black)
On any suit but its own
For example, a heart () on a spade (), club () or diamond () but not on another heart ().
(For example: tableau in Indian)

Examples
Building up in suit means that a 10 may be played on a 9.
Building up regardless of suit means that any 10 may be played on any 9.
Building down in alternating colors means that a 10 may be played either on a Jack or on a Jack.
